End of Summer BBQ held September 25 2019 in honour of Thorncliff Youth

In case you didn't already know it, we have some amazingly talented young people in our community who are quickly becoming very skilled in all kinds of soccer and basketball moves. So TCL held an end of summer BBQ on Thursday, September 5 to honour our youth. Many people of all ages joined us for a really great summer BBQ courtesy of Thornclif Community League volunteers.  After we ate, young soccer and basketball enthusiasts demonstrated their talents by participating in skill testing activities for each sport. Thereafter, the Thursday night soccer crew played a lively game of soccer until 8:00 p.m. It was a great evening of in-community family fun.

Thorncliff Community Yard Sale - Saturday, May 25 2019

Tanwani Vendor Table.jpg

You asked so we tried it! The Thorncliff Community League held its first community yard sale on May 25.  A big thank you to everyone who donated items for the sale, vendors who brought their goods to sell, and the many volunteers who donated their time and energy to set up and run the event. We are grateful to all the people who came to check out and buy our treasurers. Proceeds of about $500 went towards the rink redevelopment project currently underway.

It was a well attended community event and many of us made new connections with people in the community that we might not otherwise have made, and that's what TCL events are all about.

4th Annual Winterfest 2019

Saturday, February 16 at Thorncliff Park

A big thank you to everyone who attended our 4th annual Thorncliff Winterfest event on the Saturday of Family Day Weekend 2019. A special thanks to all the volunteers who worked hard behind the scenes to make the event another success.

Despite the cold temperatures, about 60 people spent the afternoon together enjoying horse drawn sleigh rides around Thorncliff Park and lots and lots of delicious hot cocoa, coffee and cookies. We kept ourselves warm by standing around open flamed fire pits and roasting marshmallow and hot dogs. A big hit with the kids! This year we added a lively game of broomball in the skating rink which was a great activity to do outdoors for wintertime fun.

Thanks again for joining us and we hope to see you all again next year.

Santa Light Tour December 2018

As eagerly anticipated, Santa made an exclusive appearance in Thorncliff on Saturday, December 15 during the Santa Light Tour.  Usually restricted to a single chair in a hot and stuffy mall, he opted for a walk in Thorncliff with kids young and old, and afterwards enjoyed a hot chocolate with everyone over a warm open fire. He had fun playing with the kids on the ice and said our skating rink was exceptionally good this year!

Thanks to everyone who joined us for some wintertime fun as we toured the area to see the houses decorated with Christmas lights. And thanks to the residents of Thorncliff who have decorated their houses so beautifully this year.  Attached is a festive light map created by Board Member, Pam Winski, showing all the houses in Thorncliff decorated with Christmas lights.  Way to go Thorncliff!

Here's wishing you and yours a very happy, peaceful and safe holiday season!

Children's Bike Safety Program Event - June 2, 2018

Many thanks to the City of Edmonton for bringing back to Thorncliff for a second year. This year a small group of local children had an exciting afternoon of one-to-one learning and fun with bicycle safety instructors Quinn and Jordan.  We also received a welcome visit from Jane Erdman, North West Recreation Program Manager. A short but nasty downpour tried to dampen our spirits mid-afternoon but everyone quickly found shelter and took the opportunity to enjoy an ice cream treat donated by TCL.  As soon as the rain passed, the children did not hesitate to get back to the program. A special thanks to Terry from NASCAR for once again opening up their race track for this event.

Aldergrove, Callingwood North, Lymburn, and Thorncliff Community Walking Map

This project has now been completed. The maps have been printed and distribution has begun. The project team created a walking route map to highlight local treasures in our area and encourage all residents to get out and get active in our community.

You can click here to view an electronic copy of the walking map, but there's no better way to see everything than enjoy a walk on the trails and see it for yourself. Thank you, Sharon Quickfall, for representing TCL on the Walking Map Committee.

Northern Alberta Scale Car Auto Racers (NASCAR) Association

During the summer months, come join NASCAR members every Tuesday night  at the outdoor race track in Thorncliff Park.  Thorncliff is one of a few permanent racing facilities for on road radio controlled car racing in Canada. The host club, Northern Alberta Scale Car Auto Racers Association, has been operating for about 35 years. Members run a wide variety of different class races all summer long from May through August. Races are held every Tuesday night, and if it rains, they're held on Wednesday night.

During the winter, NASCAR Association races are held on most Friday nights inside at the Air Museum on Kingsway Avenue on special racing carpet. For more information about the Association, visit their website or check them out on FaceBook.

The City of Edmonton Summer Green Shack Program is held in Thorncliff Park on weekdays during the months of July and August from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm . This is a fully supervised daily summer free drop-in program offered in the safety of our own neighbourhood park. LOCAL YOUTH PITCH IN TO GIVE THE BASKETBALL COURT A NEW LOOK

It didn't take Margaret and her energetic crew of local youth time to get down to work and paint new lines on the basketball courts in May 2018. TCL introduced a new youth basketball skill-building program for youth 7-15 years, and it just didn't seem right not having the court look its best.  So Program Co-Lead, Margaret, and her crew of rising basketball stars rose to the challenge and got the job done in no time.  And to add the finishing touches, Randy painted the basketball poles black and hung new nets on the basketball hoops just in time for the program start date.  Many thanks to these fine young volunteers for their awesome work.

SUMMER FAMILY DROP-IN SOCCER PROGRAM

In the summer we host a friendly yet competitive game of soccer every Thursday evening from mid-June to mid-September. Participants enjoy fresh watermelon or freezies and lots of cold  water. Many thanks to anyone who volunteers their time to run this program and thanks to the kids who come out to play week after week, summer after summer.
